The Soft Red

{perfect everyday makeup}

Ever since I can remember being able to apply make-up, not in secret, I have been on the lookout for a soft red lipstick. Soft red as in a light, pinky red. A shade perhaps similar to the beautiful, rosy lip colour of a small child or the colour lips would be after an intense makeout session (not to mention plumpy). To me, this is the iconic, soft, reddy stain on a Parisian woman that can be worn season after season, any occasion, any time of day. It is truly classic and sophisticated and suits everyone. It never goes out of style.

I started my quest to find this perfect, soft red at the convenience store, in the form of Cherry Chapstick. I then progressed to Annabelle, which came in a chubby lipstick pencil in a soft, pretty pinky red. I remember it being a bit brown, but that was ok because brown was cool then. Since then, I have gone through a long list of products in hopes of finding this colour that I have so clearly in my mind. Some products that I’ve tried are:

  1. MAC – Hot Tahiti
  2. Chanel Lip Stain – 733
  3. Chanel Rouge Allure – Amusing
  4. The Body Shop – Pink Ginger
  5. Dior Addict Lipstick – 773
  6. Chanel Rouge Coco – Rouge Orage
  7. Chanel Rouge Coco – Mademoiselle
  8. (as worn on Vanessa Paradis above)

  9. MAC Viva Glam Cyndi
  10. Estée Lauder Pure Colour Pomegranate Kiss
  11. Arbonne Jam
  12. Revlon Red Laquer
  13. Burt’s Bees Fig
  14. Lipstick Queen Saint Rouge
  15. Chanel Rouge Coco – Cambon
  16. Jane Iredale Nicole
  17. Rouge Dior – Rouge Blossom

I’m going to stop now because I’m starting to feel a bit guilty. Somewhere in this list, I did find what I was looking for, in a lip pencil. Chanel created a beautiful, wonderful lip liner called Griotte which is exactly what I was looking for… But, it’s a lip liner. You can’t pull out your beautiful compact and apply lip liner, you need the bullet. And its been discontinued, so it only makes an appearance for special occasions. So, my search went on. What I really need to do is write Mr. Peter Phillips replacement at Chanel (do they have one yet?) a letter and ask them a) to bring Griotte back and b) make lipstick of the same colour. If they did, I might not ever need to buy another lipstick again.
The above list may be helpful if you are on the hunt for a perfect soft red. The closest to what I’ve been looking for have been marked in bold.

Happy & Healthy

Image

My hair. During and after our two month vacay, I was exposed to a new issue with my hair – it knotted! I’m generally pretty good about getting a six to eight week trim to take off dry ends but I think the various types of weather took a toll.  [Note – If you are growing your hair, I highly recommend getting regular trims, every six to eight weeks to ensure that it keeps growing healthily.] Although I’ve been contemplating chopping it off, bob style, I decided to not make any rash decisions and get all of the dryness chopped. It feels good to have healthy feeling hair again! Thank you Andi!

Fancy Sublimage

Generally in life I try to take a proactive approach rather than reactive, and this is especially true when it comes to skincare. A few days ago, I finished my bottle of eye cream and have since been trying to find a better replacement. [I had tried the orange RE Arbonne line and have decided for a number of reasons to not reuse it, mainly because of the inconvenience of getting the product, and my horrible experiences with the sales rep.] My expectations for the new crème were pretty high: it basically had to do everything to provide soft, supple skin with enough moisture to prevent dry patches but not so much that it resulted in those small, white annoying bumps (that’s what they’re from – too much moisture). Further, it had to diminish dark under eye circles, reduce puffiness and minimize and prevent fine lines. I also wanted the crème to be a rich, velvety texture so I could enjoy the experience of putting it on day and night. So, after not that much looking around, I found the magic product – Sublimage Eye by Chanel which I got here.

It promises to do everything I want. It comes with a hefty price point but the pot is a fairly decent size, so I’m hoping it will last me at least a year. In the little gold book that I received with the crème, there is a caption ‘For Sublimely Beautiful Eyes – The skin around your eyes is transformed – incredibly smooth, appears infinitely more toned. Puffiness and the look of dark circles become a thing of the past. Your eyes light up with new radiance…’ How could I go wrong?

Fall for Red

{Anne Hathaway with a timeless look for red lips in The Devil Wears Prada}

A bold, red lip is a timeless classic, but this fall, it’s especially hot.  If you are only adding one piece to your fall wardrobe, let it be a red lipstick.  Think you can’t wear red?  There is a perfect red for everyone!  Go to your favourite beauty counter, mine is here, and try on all different types of red.  The staff at the counter will usually recommend the shades they believe to best suite your skin tone.  If you’re hesitant to try a full-on red lip, try a glaze or a stain for a softer effect.  These are some of my favourites:

  1. Chanel – Gabrielle – My work red, a true, sophisticated and classic red.
  2. Benefit – Benetint – A ‘just been kissing’ soft, natural stain.
  3. Stila – Poppy Colour Pot – Dual purpose lip and cheek stain, perfect for getting a soft stain.
  4. Chanel – Paris – The perfect evening red with the perfect name.  And a hint of shine.
  5. MAC – Lady Danger – Intense, bright orangy red.  Every girl should have a version of this shade.
  6. Jane Iredale – Nicole– A soft, true red glaze with a matte affect, also seen here.
  7. Nars – Cruella – Easy application chubby stick.  Deep, bluish red.
  8. Lipstick Queen – Medieval – Poppy King has mastered the sheer, balmy blood red.
  9. Chanel – Lune Rosse – A deep burgundy red, perfect for the fall.
  10. MAC – Fushia – An intensely pigmented pinky red.  Can be used as a soft stain or a deep matte.

Ready or Not, Here I Come!

For the past couple of weeks, I had been hearing rumours at work about my department possibly relocating to our office downtown.  Today, I got confirmation that this is true, BUT, it may only be temporary.  Nevertheless, I’m still very excited.  Here are my top ten reasons why (in random order):

  1. Lee the Shoe Repair Man at the Bay in Pacific Centre – he can fix anything.
  2. Pain au chocolat at Brioche – I went through a period in my life when I had one of these with a latte for breakfast every morning for a month straight.  It was amazing.
  3. Baguettes at Finch’s – the best baguettes I’ve had outside of Paris.
  4. Holt Renfrew – have you seen their make-up department? And shoes?
  5. Fine Finds in Yaletown – full on eye candy ranging from cute stationary to the latest Soia & Kyo coats.
  6. Karissa – within 5 km from work.
  7. Café Medina – little sister to Chambar; another lunch hotspot.
  8. The general buzz and excitement in the atmosphere – a quick stroll around town is the best ‘pick me up’.
  9. MAC flag store on Robson.
  10. Capers, Choices & Whole Foods – all within walking distance.
